What are the fundamental rules of basketball?

The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. The game has changed a lot since that time; however, the fundamental skills and rules remain the same.

If you don’t know these basic rules, it's OK.

Reminder rules:

A basket counts as 2 points.

A basket outside the 3 point line counts as 3 points.

Game starts with a jump ball at the center of the court.

The team with the ball is on the “offense”.

The team without the ball is on the “defense”.

The offense’s goal is to put the ball through the goal by shooting. The offense can advance the ball by either dribbling or passing.

Each player is allowed 5 fouls – holding, bumping, or reaching unnecessarily – before having to sit for the remainder of the game.
