High School Coach’s Top 5 Tips for Shooting the Basketball
Every basketball player loves to shoot the ball!
1. Shooter’s should develop a shooting style or technique. There are several out there ex. BEEF - (Balance, Eye, Elbow, Follow-Through) will help when shooting the basketball.
Players must get into the habit of always using these proper shooting techniques. In a game, practice, or just shooting around, always use the same technique.
If players don't have a shooting technique - they need to develop one!
2. Shooter’s should be in proper balance when shooting the basketball. Proper balance means:
• Feet under shoulders
• Shoulders square to rim
• Knees bent
• Toes pointing directly to the rim
• Jump straight up – never forward or backward (fade)
3. Relax and concentrate on the basket. Shooter’s should focus on the two rungs of the net closest to them. When shooting lay-ups and bank shots, players should focus on the part of the backboard where they will bank the ball.
4. Players must know when they have a good shot - and then take it. A good shot is determined by open space, defense on teammates, play that’s called, time on the clock, and your shooting range.
5. Players should follow through on every shot they take. They should also hold their follow through(hand pointed directly at the rim) until the ball goes through the net. This forces the shooter to keep the hand higher and bent over.
You get these 5 tips down – your playing time will increase immediately.
